Useful Tips for Your Home & Auto Security

Keep your vehicle safe:

  • Park your vehicle off the street if possible.
  • Enhance your exterior lighting.
  • Leave porch lights on at night, add motion-sensor lighting and add pathway or sidewalk solar lighting.
  • Prune back trees or bushes that obstruct light and visibility.
  • Turn exterior video cameras toward the street to capture activity and people near vehicles parked on the street.

Keep your home safe:

  • Install a good quality deadbolt locks and a security strike plate on the door frame.
  • Mount doors so that the hinges and bolts are facing the inside of the house.
  • Chain locks are poor security; install a wide angle viewer instead.
  • If keys are lost, change your locks.
  • Keep your garage door locked, even when you are at home.
  • Drill a hole through window frames and insert a double-headed nail.
  • Good quality locks should be installed, and used on all windows.
  • If you’re going on vacation, inform a neighbour of your departure and return dates.
  • Cancel or redirect your mail and deliveries, or have a neighbour collect these items.
  • Arrange to have your lawn cut and walkways cleared.
  • Use timers to activate lights at various intervals.
