Construction of Scarborough’s second outdoor ice rink – McCowan District Park

McCowan District Park in Ward 36 will be home to the second outdoor ice rink in Scarborough and has been incorporated into the 2014 Parks, Forestry and Recreation capital budget.

“I have been working with City staff and am delighted to announce that an outdoor ice rink will be built at McCowan District Park,” said Councillor Gary Crawford. “The rink will provide additional winter recreational opportunities for Ward 36 and Scarborough residents.”

Construction on a new ice rink support building, which will house the mechanical room, ice cleaning machine and washrooms, will begin in 2015 and the rink will be operational for the start of the 2016 skating season.

This ice rink is part of the second phase of the approved community master plan for McCowan District Park. Scarborough’s only outdoor ice rink is located at the Scarborough Civic Centre.

  1. You should think of sidewalks in cliffside not a out door skating rink !!!!!!!!!

    • Cliffside sidewalks have not been forgotten.

Staff have reviewed the plan after the initial public meeting and came up with a proposal. However, it was later determined that the proposed route was not feasible on a particular section because of the sloping of the road.

Staff will be submitting a revised plan and then they will be brought to the community for further consultation. I’ll keep you posted.

  2. This is amazing news and long overdue for Scarborough. Great way to keep all ages of the community engaged and introduce youth and newcomers to a great Canadian pastime. Hopefully (unlike the Scarborough Civic Centre) this rink will have boards for shinny.

  3. Great news for the community. It is great to see more community services for the youth ..
